Embrace the Holiday Season
By Ann Martin
Another giving and glorious holiday season is approaching and it is an important time for us to give back to our local community. There are many ways to contribute and make a change. Even the whole family

can get involved and make giving back to the community an annual tradition. Here are some ideas on how you can make a change within your local community.
Soup Kitchens
Not everyone can afford a hot and hearty meal and it is these people and the homeless as well that depend on soup kitchens for their meals. During the holiday season, soup kitchens are turning out more and more meals and need volunteers to make sure those hot meals get served. There are many tasks that volunteers can help with: delivering meals, serving meals, preparing meals, organizing and inventorying the kitchen, and even cleaning up after the meals. Conduct a search online to see where your local soup kitchen is located. Contact them and see what volunteer duties they are seeking to fill.
Retirement Homes and Communities
Those elderly people that reside in either retirement homes or communities often do not have relatives that live locally. Because of that, these residents do not typically receive visits, which can make for a lonely holiday season. Most retirement facilities have volunteer programs so that these elderly residents can have visitors. There are many ways to spend quality time with residents: taking a walk, sharing a meal together and even playing cards. Not only will you enjoy putting a smile on someone else's face, but you will also form a cherishing relationship that will last for years.
Animal Shelters
You can even make a positive contribution when it comes to animals as well. Many animal shelters are seeking volunteers to fill all sorts of duties. These volunteer positions can include: dog walking, cuddling with the kittens, feeding and caring for the animals, and temporarily provide shelter for pets in needs, just to name a few duties. Brighten up an amimal's day by giving them the extra care and attention they so need and deserve.
It is quite easy to give your time in a variety of ways. Embrace the holiday season and give back to your community. Maybe it will turn into long-term volunteer position that you and your entire family can take part in together.
