Fall in Love with Fall
By Ann Martin
Now that the summer season will be ending soon, doesn't necessarily mean that we still can not enjoy the outdoors, especially our garden area. Autumn is a wonderful time of year to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. Sure it gets darker a little sooner and it is a little cooler come evening time, but there are ways to embrace the change from summer to fall.
Have friends and family over in the evening and light up that beautiful firepit on your patio! It certainly will take the chill off, but will make your gathering feel cozy like everyone is huddled around a campfire. Go ahead and get the fixings out for an after-dinner dessert of delicious s'mores! Who doesn't like the gooeyness of roasted marshmallows, smushed in between graham crackers and chocolate! Everyone loves that old time classic dessert, just beware that ghost stories may be told!
Even as the fall season progresses, host an afternoon dessert buffet. Now, this should not be any ordinary buffet, but rather the desserts should be fitting for the fall season. Have neighbors, friends and family gather and bring their favorite autumn dessert. Classic fall desserts include: apple crisp, carrot cake, pear tarts, snicker doodle cookies, and ginger snaps, just to name a few. Don't forget that any dessert that involves pumpkin is a perfect seasonal dessert as well. Serve apple cider or maybe even hot toddies for the adults. Add a bit more fun to the event by having everyone vote on their favorite dessert!
Of course when hosting an autumn outdoor event, make sure it feels like autumn! Have the wood for your firepit stacked neatly off to the side, have plush pillows nestled in the corners of your patio chairs, you could even have a few blankets placed out. Have that autumn "scent " outdoors, by placing cinnamon scented pinecones in a glass bowl and use it as your center piece. Or maybe light a few spiced scented candles, to fill the air with that familiar seasonal scent. Swap out those summery tablecloths for a more textured plaid tablecloth that adds that sense of warmth to your table. Placing hales of hay around your patio area as well as pumpkins and gourds will make your patio space truly feel like fall has finally arrived.
So kick back and relax! Although summer is coming to an end, there is still enough time to enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful welcoming fall weather. Continue to enjoy your outdoor patio or garden space with your family and friends, by having them over to enjoy the cooler weather in a warm way.
