A Food Revolution

By Ann Martin

Many of us are trying to fuel our bodies with the right forms of healthy food. We all know the impact of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but at times it can be a challenging task. Either financially we can not always buy the fresh produce or the whole grain breads, or simply put sometimes our families are not used to eating that way.

There are small changes you can do even if you can not do them all at once. But one of the major changes is to use fresh ingredients when cooking. I am not talking about using strictly organic foods and ingredients, I mean just fresh foods. There are so many quick and easy meals, which can be purchased at the grocery store that are already cooked and seasoned and the only thing left for you to do is heat it up in the microwave. These meals are very convenient, but also very unhealthy. Unfortunately, many of these "heat and eat" food items that are available are loaded with preservatives, unnecessary sugars, high levels of sodium and other unnecessary ingredients.

On the other hand when you cook, you know what is going into the meal you make. There is no guesswork about it. That is how healthy cooking really should be. How can we all make this change, from processed foods to fresh foods? It is actually quite simple. Make the change slowly. Start by incorporating a few fresh meals each week into you cooking rotation. Go ahead and search for some new and exciting menus, which use fresh ingredients. If you search online, many websites will even give you a shopping list for each meal that you can just print and take with you to the grocery store! Now, how easy is that? Once a meal plan is in place, you won't be stressed for time and will not be panicking around dinnertime and reach for that processed bag of chicken nuggets to heat up in the oven. Go ahead and surprise your family with a new recipe that uses fresh ingredients. Set the table with your Noritake colorwave dinner plates for them to enjoy a new and exciting meal.

For those that have a limited food budget, eating healthy is possible for you too! In order to eat healthy and fresh on a budget, one should eat what is in season. Not only will these food items be loaded with fresh vitamins and nutrients, more than likely they were locally grown. By purchasing in season foods, you are supporting local agriculture and getting these items for a great price that can fit almost into anybody's budget. By choosing to incorporate foods that are in season into your meals, you are in for a variety of meals, from summertime salads to warm and hearty soups in the winter. Your menu and your taste buds surely will not get bored. Grab your dinnerware and get ready for a delicious seasonal meal!

By steering clear of processed foods and eating fresh foods, your overall health and energy levels will improve! Remember that treats are considered treats for a reason and should not be considered as an everyday indulgence. Although, eating healthy and fresh everyday may be a challenge, it is possible and the change can be made.
