Taking Aim at Gun Registry
14 years of "waste" could come to an end in Ottawa.
Federal gun registry has not improved public safety despite costing taxpayers more than $2 billion
Canada’s homicide rate and number of gang-related murders has increased since the federal government’s firearms registry and licensing program was implemented
How
the West Was Lost
“Parliaments all over the world are churning
out laws by the bucketful. Yet, they fail to protect citizens
so spectacularly that one is tempted to think that this is
not their real purpose. […] Governments are no longer
there to protect society and the individuals within it. [...]
For that reason a crime committed by one individual against
another is of little consequence to them.”

Desperate Liberals: Changing Gang Control
to Gun Control
A very well written article on Canada's Liberals and their
misguided fiasco with Gun Control!
Don't blame American guns
Mr. Martin's larger mistake is that -- like most politicians
in Canada -- he puts his faith in gun control as a means
to fight crime, and clearly believes the United States should
too. But as Canada's experience with its registry -- which
hasn't solved any crimes -- shows, gun control isn't the
answer.
- National Post
"The
problem is not with people having legally registered
(guns),"
Tory said the
answer isn't to target law-abiding gun owners (as Toronto
Mayor David Miller seemed to with his call for handguns
to be stored in depots).
He called for tougher sentencing, more police officers and tighter controls
on illegal guns being smuggled into Ontario from the U.S.
Ontario
Premier 'Blames the Americans'
"McGuinty would
be much further ahead if he concentrated his efforts on fighting
crime and securing our border instead of putting on a show
for the anti-American crowd."
Blame
the Americans (our National pastime!)
"Not
only are they (the Americans) responsible for the mess in
Iraq,
now they have to take the blame for Toronto’s carnage."

Gun
Laws do Not Reduce Criminal Violence According
to New Study
Restrictive
firearm legislation has failed to reduce gun violence
in Australia, Canada, or Great Britain. The policy of
confiscating guns has been an expensive failure
Gun
debate heats up again in Calgary
“If people want guns,
they're always going to be able to get the guns
and, unfortunately, those people are the ones that
get the guns for the wrong reasons.
Not a lot we can do about it, do the best we can,
but I think it all boils down to stiffer penalties,
get the people off the street, the guns go with
them,” said Dale Burn, Calgary Police Service.

Gun
Control in Canada
The
Canadian Liberal Government has
dedicated themselves to instilling gun control registration
come hell or high water.
This may be a very good concept, but the government themselves
lessen gun related charges relating to a commission of
crime!
In many cases, even when a restricted handgun is used,
the related charge is reduced or dropped or the penalty
runs concurrent with other charges! (In some cases there
is a mandatory penalty to be served consecutively to
other charges).
Looking
at some of the penalties on the existing laws
(chart right), it seems that if a person commits
a crime with a weapon, they would hit upon more than
one of the penalties. If each charge was not minimized
or given 'concurrently', a common robbery would involve
several charges easily totaling 20 years in prison!
Now that certainly should get one thinking before
getting into trouble!
A
person doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to know
that if the existing gun charges were strictly enforced,
the eventual effect would be positive and we would
have a billion dollars (not counting the ongoing
costs to maintain this system) to be put into something
much more needed..
Making
every person in Canada register their non restricted
firearm does little to deter crime and places an
enormous liability on innocent gun collectors, hunters,
etc. The huge majority of Canadians have never used
a firearm in any form of criminal act, but they will
shoulder great responsibility even to the point of
possibly being charged should someone break in and
steal their firearm. Where has the common sense gone?
We
have had strict handgun restrictions for years. Handguns
are still being used today in criminal acts! In fact,
their use is increasing! (Again, looking at the penalties,
if enforced, it is hard to imagine how a criminal
with an unauthorized handgun doing an illegal act
could ever be back on the street within 20 years
on gun charges alone without looking at the other
offenses!) So why are they still using them?
Gun
violence rocks Toronto again
Mon,
11 Nov 2002 - Toronto
Julian
Fantino, chief of Canada's largest municipal police force,
said half the homicides in Toronto this year were as a result
of guns. That's substantially higher than the 23 per cent in
1998.
He has said criminal gun use is a
national crisis.
"Handguns
especially are readily available on the streets
and criminal haunts of our major cities," Fantino
wrote in a letter to the citizens of Toronto.
(Canada has handgun
restrictions and registrations in place for
over 60 years!)
hmmmm.. The Federal Liberal Government thinks
another billion dollars and making law abiding
people register non restricted weapons
will change things?

A person gets stopped in a vehicle carrying 3

of restricted ammunition.
After four and one half months in custody awaiting
trial on these and other charges, the judge
hands out as additional sentencing ONE DAY in
jail plus TWO CONCURRENT ONE DAY sentences
for weapons charges!!
For the rest of us, under the Gun Control law,
just failing to register a legitimate weapon
could send us to prison for 5 years!
