Helpful Weight Management Tips
By Ann Martin
With the start of the New Year comes many New Year's resolutions. Even though we are in the month of February already, some of these resolutions, unfortunately have already fallen by the waste side. But there are many of us that are making a trying effort with regards to either losing a few of those extra and annoying pounds, or just trying to maintain our weight and not have it increase. Many of us often wish that there was some secret "magic pill" to losing or to maintaining our weight, but the reality is . . . that there is not. But, there are two things that do work, eating healthy food portions and exercising. It is a fact that this two factors are the main components of maintaining or losing weight. There may be a few other "sciences" involved, but essentially it comes down to those two things.
- How Much Are You Eating? Depending on your sex, age, weight and height, we all have a certain number of calories we should be consuming each and every day. It is important to find this information out. Once your caloric intake has been determined, sit down and take a look at your portions. Take it a step further and check out the nutritional label on some of your foods and see what an actual serving size actually is. For example, a can of soup contains typically 2.5 servings! Many of us could eat the entire can ourselves. It is important to limit excessive portion amounts.
- Are You Drinking Enough Water? Many of us hardly drink enough water throughout the day. Water is essential for our body to work properly and to function at its best. Start your morning off with a glass of water as you are getting ready for the day. Then sneak in a glass here are there. Most importantly, have a glass of water before each meal. Not only will it help you feel fuller (resulting in eating less), but you got to sneak one more extra and necessary glass of H2O.
- How Active Are You? It can be quite challenging to get up and get moving! Especially when many of us work at least one job, even some of us are parents now and making time for ourselves is difficult. But it is so important that we do! Not only do we set a good example for our children, but in order to lose weight, you need to burn calories. Any type of cardiovascular activity gets your heart pumping. Getting this type of exercise in at least 4 times a week and for about 45 minutes a session. This is a wonderful way to jump start your exercise regimen. Once your exercise routine is established, try incorporating some strength training exercises, with or without free weights. An exercise ball makes for a great way to tone your body as it focuses on your overall core.
As you can see, just by starting with a few simple lifestyle changes not only can you begin to lose weight, but also learn how to manage your weight as well.
